The charm of flowers

In Madeira, the coming of spring is celebrated with the traditional Flower Festival.

The Flower Festival dates back to 1954 and is to take place between April 19th and May 13th. Though this festivity is starting to be felt a bit everywhere around the island, it is in Avenida Arriaga, in Funchal, that it comes into full bloom. There, thousands of flowers from species typical in Madeira are arranged into the shape of carpets.

On April 21st, hundreds of children parade to Praça do Município, flower in hand, to build a Wall of Hope, symbolizing the longing for a better world.

The Flower Parade happens on April 22nd in Avenida do Mar. There is music, dancing and plenty of joy in both the audience and the participants standing on the vehicles and dressed in flowers from head to toe.

The ‘Madeira Auto Parade’ arrives on April 29th in Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro. This is a unique opportunity to contemplate the elegance of classical vehicles and with plenty of entertainment to go, with several musical bands, as well as the colour and beauty of the participants dressed in costumes inspired by the flowers of Madeira.

There is also gastronomy, arts and crafts as well as flowers in display. The best of the flower displays spread along the avenue will be given awards during the opening event.
