Tuna Route Festival

Porto Santo holds a gastronomic festival dedicated to one of the most important fish in the Madeira archipelago: tuna

Between June 4th and 9th, tuna is the challenge that brings a group of chefs over to Porto Santo to take part in the Tuna Route Festival. Every night, dinner features a tasting menu illustrating several ways of preparing tuna in different countries.

Chef Manuel Santos, of the Vila Baleira Resort, is hosting the event at his hotel. The gastronomic consultant, Chef Cordeiro, serves as the festival’s curator. Chefs who have confirmed their attendance include the Italian Carmina Basile, the Spanish José Lopez and the Frenchman Yves Gautier, who lives in Madeira for many years. They will be joined by chefs from Japan and the Phillipines, as well as the runner-up for the title of Masterchef Australia 2018, Ben Borsht.

This year’s edition will see 15 of Porto Santo’s restaurants take part in a gastronomic competition named ‘The Star is Tuna’, which invites the general population and restaurants to present creations themed after tuna.

Tours to tuna fishing vessels are also scheduled, guided by fishermen and with the presence of local artisans throughout the event. The Vila Baleira Resort hosts a photographic exhibition organised by National Geographic’s Pepe Briz, on the life of tuna fishermen in the Azores.

The festival also includes an entertainment programme featuring music, dancing, cinema and the presentation of products, wine tastings and workshops.
