Arts here… and there

Four days of art, culture and tradition in festival at Ponta do Sol, headlined by Benjamin Clementine

Five stages, seven arts. This is the motto, in lieu of a slogan, that identifies the Aqui Acolá Festival – literally meaning ‘here and there’. For the fifth consecutive year, this cultural event continues to combine several arts.

It starts on May 30th, the day of Ponta do Sol’s old bank holiday commemorating the Ascension. Until June 2nd, there will be music, dancing, theatre, cinema, literature, or photography, in the many stages spread throughout the town, the seafront, historic area, a chapel, the John Dos Passos Cultural Centre auditorium or an art deco cinema.

Benjamin Clementine Headlines the event. The concert in Ponta do Sol, on May 31st at 9: 30 p.m., is the first in his 2019/2020 international tour. Winner of the 2015 Mercury Prize, this British, singer, songwriter and pianist with two original albums and a third one on the way is one of the stars of current British music.

Playing on the same night, at 10: 30 p.m., are the Ukrainian DakhaBrakha , whose music is gifted with a strong ethnic component, illustrative of many influences from around the world.

Mayra Andrade, one of the best-known voices in Cape-Verdean and Portuguese music takes to the stage of Aqui Colá on June 1st, at 10 p.m., for a show that is part of her tour throughout Europe to promote the album she launched this March.

Photography is also a highlight, thanks to the retrospective offered by photographer and illustrator Elene Usdin’s – which illustrates how this is an eclectic event where the visual arts have a space of their own in exhibition rooms – and the installation of renowned Madeiran artist Paulo Sérgio Beju.

The programme features many other Madeiran talents. Several local artists present their works in theatre, music, dancing, photography or performances.

Also included in the event is an encounter with cinema dedicated to indie productions from Europe and the rest of the World.

For its diversity and for the fact that it is an event distributed throughout spaces that involve a whole locale, in just five years Aqui Acolá has become one of the most original cultural events in Madeira.
