Repsol made public the 2016 edition of its guide, with the best restaurants of Spain and Portugal.

Repsol’s ‘Suns’ are the synonym of gastronomic excellency and are given to the best restaurants of the year, awarding them as a good choice for a meal.

The ranks are three ‘Suns’ for the best restaurants of the year, two ‘Suns’ as certainty of excellent cuisine and service, and one ‘Sun’ for haute cuisine and of sufficient variety.

In a universe of 564 restaurants, 43 restaurants were awarded 3 ‘Suns’, 7 in Portugal; 168 were given two ‘Suns’, 21 in Portugal, and 353 restaurants were given one ‘Sun’, 60 in Portugal.

In Madeira, two restaurants were granted this distinction.

Holding two ‘Suns’ is The Cliff Bay’s Il Galo D’Oro, described by the Repsol guide’s website as having ‘a creative and technical cuisine of great quality’ with a menu in ‘constant renewal’.

With two ‘Suns’, the Belmond Reid’s Palace’s Vila Cipriani restaurant is described as a space where ‘enormous glamour is harmonized with a cuisine of quality and aesthetic rigour’.

These awards are granted by the Royal Academy of Gastronomy and the Brotherhood of Good Food, who select and assess restaurants based on culinary excellency, quality of ingredients, respect for local cuisine, wine list and service quality.
