Be it due to its proximity to the Cathedral, be it because of the details along the renovated building, at the Sé Boutique Hotel, History joins hands with the present.
The entrance might be mistaken for that of a private home, such is the comfort and homely feel of the hall. And the décor was not left to chance. Knickknacks and other objects overflowing with history take visitors to olden days though the clock keeps ticking forward. One such object is the old till on the reception counter, bringing back the memory of old small businesses.
The hotel’s concept – that of a cosmopolitan and urban hotel blending the singularity of the past with art – is fairly easily grasped by its guests as early as the moment they rest their luggage on its floor. Inspiration flows from the fine gallery inside the hotel.
Local, national and international artists have their works featured in this space. All is made possible because a hotel can also be a cultural hub, from the gallery right down to the rooms.
The artwork in display was selected by curator André Gonçalves. Many of the photographs adorning the hotel’s 54 rooms were taken by him.
Because this is a hundred year-old building, most of the Sé Boutique Hotel’s rooms have a different layout which allow for truly unique experiences if visitors return multiple times.
There are four different types of rooms on offer: Suites, Deluxe, Superior and Standard. All boast great comfort and elegance as well as the hottest tech out there (professional Wi-Fi and large Smart TVs), the feeling of being home, its trademark.
The décor in each room blends modern with classy and has comfort has its top priority. The patchwork on the tiles is the hotel’s trademark and is given special emphasis in the rooms. It reproduces the patchwork of the 15th century tiles that exist in the building after which the hotel is named, the Cathedral of Funchal. One of Funchal’s most emblematic buildings, it was once home to the world’s largest Diocese and a gateway to the New World.
The Sé Boutique Hotel also offers a view of almost all of the city, its rooftop bar sporting a view of almost 360 degrees of the Madeiran capital. Its atmosphere is ideal and invites relaxation in a unique blend of mountain and ocean. And there is no shortage of cultural and musical events, if possible, always with a nice fresh drink.
But décor and views are not the only impressive things about the Sé Boutique Hotel, it also excels in gastronomy. The rooftop bar is joined by two other spaces in offering its visitors unique experiences.
‘O Calhau’ is Mediterranean cuisine restaurant already with a long experience in the regional market. It sports an enviable exterior area, a varied menu and a combination of flavours, fragrances and colours bound to bring you back.
The ‘Cosi Scoozi’ is an Italian cuisine restaurant committed to healthy food with fresh ingredients and regional products, most of which are organically grown in an agricultural farm on the island. Pizza and pasta are the go-to options here given that the latter are made by the restaurant’s team. The end result is an experience unique to each dish.
Also in the Sé Boutique Hotel is the ‘Lobby Café’. Also with a homely feeling to it, tea and pastries are served in old dishware from the prestigious Portuguese brand Vista Alegre while drinks are served in glasses made of old crystal. Flavour is joined with emotion at each step of the meal.
And one cannot help but mention the beautiful tropical garden, in an interior patio, where the beauty of plants from the island’s Laurel forest is set against the backdrop of the old manor houses of the island, catching the eye of the curious and immersing them in an atmosphere of pure contemplation.
