Fashion: Summer luxury

The haute couture collections for Summer 2014 are pure elegance and refinement, made from delicate silk, lace and embroidery.

What separates Haute Couture Fashion Week from the rest of the fashion weeks? It is of course the beauty of the collections and the sterling work that goes into making each piece in all its delicate glory. Choosing the perfect dress can be the hardest part when the choice is as vast and as stunning as this. The Haute Couture Fashion Week, which took place in the City of Light, Paris, was once again up to its usual standards of luxury.  The refinement of the cut and craftsmanship proved that the work of some of the most famous and recognized designers and their respective brands work tirelessly to achieve perfection for a consumer that's ever more demanding.

Arte. But it's also important to highlight the colour combinations that play harmoniously bet ween themselves, enhancing the final pieces and incorporated to give a festive and effusive touch to whoever wears them.

Hitting a more discreet note, the Elie Saab collection was designed with a dream-like world in mind. Princess-cut dresses, flowy skirts and hand-embroidered lace corsets evoke the world of classic fantasy. Red is this designer's colour of choice, making a beautiful contrast when worn by women with pale skin. Each dress takes at least 200 hours to be made, depending on the complexity of the applications and embroidery.

This ethnic tone could also be seen on the haute couture catwalk through the Maison Martin Margiela, one of the latest brands from the French school with a collection that's aimed at those who like a different style that's not at all mainstream.

The French house of Chanel played with opposites by pairing wedding dresses or tailleurs with trainers. Flats are in fashion, dethroning the era of the high heel, to some extent. Fun and comfortable are two of the words that define this collection, although elegance hasn't been forgotten, seeing as Karl Lagerfeld knows how to blend sporty and sophisticated to perfection. Fashion is starting to set a different tone (within the limited room for manoeuvre it has), recovering the cultural influences of the different people across the world, in a visual construction that's very much inspired by artistic movements such as painting, sculpture and architecture.
