My Madeira by João Melim

Essential asked the manager of Fábrica Ribeiro Seco Mel de Cana what makes our island so peculiar.

We are located in the Atlantic Ocean, with two inhabited islands and other uninhabited ones making up the Madeira archipelago.

In the year when Madeira commemorates 600 years, it continues to await your visit so you can delight in its many corners of sheer natural beauty, which include stunning viewpoints and walking routes that let you touch the 'clouds' or take in a beautiful sunrise or sunset.

But do not be content to explore only natural beauty, since you will also have the chance to explore its gastronomy, extremely rich in the application of regional products from the sea and agriculture and which go down very well with one of the island's white, red or sparkling wines, or a beer or a soda. And as an appetizer and a dessert, one must always enjoy a glass of Madeira wine.

In terms of regional products, you can find many more made on the island, such as agricultural Rum, cream cheese, sugarcane syrup and derived sweets, including biscuits and molasses cake, among many other tasty delicacies.

For those who like to gain a taste of local culture the island offers a number of museums, each with a culturally rich theme, that you just cannot pass over. You will also find folkloric groups spreading the rhythms and tunes of each parish in some local restaurants.

The island sporting an extremely balanced weather the whole year round, you can experience enviably warm seawater any time of the year and go for a dive in of the nature reserves or try a boat ride to see dolphins, wales, as well as the island from the sea.

There are events throughout the entire year. I would highlight the Flower Festival and New Year's Eve, which was even referenced in the Guinness World Records™ as the 'World's Largest Fireworks Show'.

And you cannot miss out on visiting the other island right next door: Porto Santo. Go for a walk on its golden fine-grained sand beaches with therapeutic properties. Extended over 9 kilometers, it was even voted the 'Best Dune Beach' in the '7 Wonders- Beaches of Portugal' contest. There is plenty of walking routes and gastronomy to go on.

We await your visit to the 'Pearl of the Atlantic'.
