Madeira: Europe’s best!

This is now the fourth time the Madeira islands have been voted Europe’s Leading Island Destination.

Madeira was once more voted Europe’s Leading island Destination at the World Travel Awards. The results of the poll held worldwide by professionals working in the tourism industry were made public at the European gala, held in the city of St Petersburg, Russia.

Its contenders for the title were the also Portuguese Azores islands, the Spanish Balearic islands, the Greek island of Crete, Cyprus, the British isles of Guernsey and Jersey, Malta and the Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily.

This is the fourth time Madeira has been given this award, having previously been Europe’s Leading Island Destination in 2013, 2014 and 2016. Elsewhere in the World Travel Awards, the island was also awarded the title of the World’s Leading Island Destination in 2015 and 2016.

Its victory in Europe means that Madeira is now running up for the world award, the winner of which is to be announced on December 10th, in Phu Quoc, Vietnam. The same method of selection is employed and is based on an online poll being currently held, until 30th of October.

Madeira’s victory as Europe’s Leading Island Destination will, no doubt, have profited from the support of Madeiran footballer Cristiano Ronaldo who supported the cause and called for votes on the island. In less than 24 hours the footballer’s post reached around 2 million likes on Instagram and about 145 thousand reactions on Facebook.

In addition to Europe’s Leading island Destination, other prizes were awarded in Madeira. The Pestana Porto Santo All Inclusive Beach & Spa Resort was distinguished in the category of best all inclusive in Europe.

Portugal was also chosen as the best destination in Europe. See the complete list at https://www.worldtravelawards.com/nominees/2017/europe
