Lighting up your Christmas spirit

The streets of Funchal gain a different charm in the beginning of December when the Christmas lights are lit up.

Christmas celebrations take off on the first day of December. Christmas lights are one of the major attractions of the season. Thousands of lightbulbs, LEDs and rope lights are given the shape of motifs alluding to the season as well as to the region. And all sorts of cultural features start to pop up in the streets of the Madeiran capital led by several musical ensembles. The major hubs are Avenida Arriaga and Praça do Povo, where there are all sorts of traditional food and beverages from this time of year in Madeira. And there are also plenty of people and reasons to celebrate. The Christmas lights are part of the extended Christmas and New Year’s programme which runs until January 8th.
