Madeira looking to be Europe’s best

Madeira is once again a contender at the World Travel Awards for the title of Europe’s Leading Island Destination. Votes are being cast until August 6th.

Madeira is out to conquer the title of Europe’s Leading Island Destination for the fourth time.

Its fellow contenders are the Portuguese Azores archipelago, The Balearic Islands (Spain), the Canary Islands (Spain), Crete (Greece), Cyprus, Guernsey (United Kingdom), Jersey (United Kingdom), Malta, Sardinia (Italy) and Sicily (Italy).

Not only is the island in the game for one of the big titles, several of its hotels and resorts are also nominees in several categories for the 24th edition of the World Travel Awards.

The Quinta do Lorde Resort is nominated for five categories: Leading Green Hotel; Leading Seafront Resort; Leading Family Resort and Most Romantic Resort. This hotel in Caniçal is also nominated for Leading Island Resort.

This last category sees some competition between the island’s resorts as The Belmond Reid’s Palace and Savoy Saccharum Hotel are also nominees, the latter making its debut as a contender for these awards.

In other categories, the Pestana Carlton is nominated for Leading Luxury Hotel and the Pestana Porto Santo for Leading All-inclusive Resort. The Vine Hotel is running for Leading Design Hotel, an award it has won once before, and for Leading Boutique Hotel, where it is running against, among others, the Quinta da Bela Vista.

The results are to be announced on September 30th at the WTA gala in St Petersburg, Russia. Polls are being held online and close on August 6th. Anyone interested can cast their vote.
