Columbus Festival in Porto Santo

Yet again, Porto Santo is the stage for an emblematic event, which has very much become a part of its cultural repertoire

This year it will be held between September 13th and 15th. A yearly event that takes over the town centre with a programme that re-enacts the atmosphere of late 15th and early 16th century Portuguese Discoveries.

The event is marked by the coming ashore of Columbus and a 16th century market with lots of gastronomy, arts, games, music and dancing.

According to History, navigator Christopher Columbus lived in Porto Santo in the 1480s, when he married Filipa Perestrelo, daughter of one of the admirals who were in charge of governing the island.
