The 16th Century Market of Machico recreates the age when settlers came to Madeira, this year under the theme ‘The arrival’
600 years ago, on July 2nd 1419, Portuguese sailors disembarked in Machico. It was the beginning of a process that culminated in the settlement of people in these then uninhabited island.
‘The arrival’ of sailors João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz is the theme of this year’s edition of the 16th Century Market, which sees the town of Machico turn into a true medieval village every year.
This year it happens on June 7th, 8th and 9th, offering a number of cultural and musical activities. Around 1,200 participants are involved, each and every one dressed in medieval costumes and many of whom partake in a themed parade. The space is divided into different themed areas like the Traders’ Street, where many products are on sale; the Tavern Square – a gastronomical area with many games and a Moorish camp, among other attractions. Entertainment is left in the hands of 50 capable groups, comprising around 600 participants, and five musical and dramatic groups.
The entertainment is enacted by around 50 groups with around 600 participants, including music and theatre and is simultaneously spread throughout the Stage, the Nossa Senhora do Amparo Fort and the Taverns Square.
The programme includes the ´Machico in the Route to New Worlds’ colloquium and ‘The house of Tristão’ exhibition, at the La Vie Shopping Centre and the Madeira Airport.
