The Vila Baleira town in Porto Santo hosts another event to celebrate the famous explorer.
Between September 15th and 17th, the golden Island is once more the stage for another Columbus Festival, an event that is already a part of the official tourism calendar for the Madeira destination.
This festival portrays the history of the 1500s, more precisely, the period when Christopher Columbus passed by and then lived on the island of Porto Santo. There will be exhibitions, entertainment in the streets, arts and crafts, gastronomy, circus acts, combat with weapons training, music, theatre performances and plays depicting the hazards of times of peace and war in the 15th century.
The first time Columbus made contact with Madeira was in 1478, when he was dealing in the sugar trade of Funchal.
The Columbus Festival is one of the largest events of Porto Santo and it alone largely accounts for a substantial number of visitors during the three days of the event who come in search of the opportunity to live in the olden days of the age of discoveries.
