A decade with Essential

Thank you to all those who allow us to continue dreaming everyday and to have the pleasure of writing a magazine out of the good things in life!

Essential Madeira Islands was born ten years ago. Good material and finishing touches, quality photography, excellent contents and bilingual publishing have been the project’s guidelines.

A decade later, Essential Madeira Islands is more mature and with a better defined matrix. We have learnt, evolved, been given compliments and criticism and known how to adapt to great changes in the World, Madeira and the Press over the last ten years.

Nowadays, Essential is a quality magazine, but also an internet portal (www.essential-madeira.com) on continuous update. We are present in social media and made the online reading of our editions possible. We have a club of subscribers with readers in many European countries and we are a brand equated with quality.

We live in hard times and will continue to struggle every day so that each edition is a reality but, as a team, we take pride in accomplishing our mission and the tenacity to continue fighting.

Essential is a magazine for its readers, and they come in thousands. It is a magazine for its sponsors, without whose investment we would not exist. It is a magazine for Madeira, a means for its promotion, and, I would dare say, one of the best instruments in advertising these islands, to those who live on them, and to those who visit them.

But what is the secret ingredient to keep the momentum of this publication in such a small island? It is the rich History and Nature of the island itself that answer this question. Madeira is built upon three ideas that make the difference: Atlanticism, Microdiversity and Universalism.

Atlanticism refers to the island’s geographical positioning, climate and the fact that here, a society different from those of continental Europe was built. More exposed to the cultures that passed by it, onboard the ships that for centuries sailed the Atlantic, the island always knew how to absorb something from these passing peoples.

Microdiversity has to do with the amount of activities, places and landscapes offered by such a small island.

Universalism, because this island has always been a central hub in the world’s trade routes, a gateway and a laboratory to test the European expansion that made the world into what it is today.

What we do here at Essential is to tell these stories, reveal new trends and showcase news and places. In ten years, we earnt our status as a reference and to surpass that is our biggest challenge.
