Music in the Chapels

Two chapels in Ponta do Sol were turned into stages for concerts of different musical genres.

The welcoming environment of the chapels of St Anthony and St Sebastian, in Ponta do Sol, served as the stage of a series of concerts called ‘Music in the Chapels’.

The season began in October and lasts until the 26th of May, with a total of 14 concerts, of different musical genres. The whole initiative, however, began in 2013 with the purpose of gaining a better appreciation both of musical projects and of the heritage of the historic centre of Ponta do Sol through the two chapels where the event took place.

The main focus was on chamber music, with regional groups, who displayed what organizers called the ‘steamy artistic nobility, with eclectic scrolls, that exists in lands such as Madeira’.
Another purpose was to highlight traditional Madeiran music by incarnating different approaches to music and highlighting groups from Ponta do Sol.

Besides the chapel setting, these concerts also invested in the intimacy and difference of the environment by having the space lit by 150 candles.

The next concert will be on the 23rd of January with the world music of the C’azoada group. The 13th of February will be the return of classical music with a mandolin quintet.

This is project promoted by the Town Hall of Ponta do Sol in partnership with the RETOIÇA Association and with the collaboration of local firms.
