For one week, several journalists and writers of different nationalities will be coming to Madeira to attend the 6th edition of the Madeira Literary Festival and debate this year’s overall theme, ‘Truth and Lies in Literary Fiction’.

The festival is to be held between the 11th and 16th of April and will comprise various talks, book presentations and concerts.

The opening session is scheduled for the 14th of April, at 6:30 p.m. and will have the participation of famous Mozambican writer Mia Couto who will be talking about how ‘We can make do with life but it alone is not enough’.

The closing session is schedule for the festival’s last day, at 6 p.m., and will have the writer Lídia Jorge talking about how ‘A great book does not always have the touch of a great man behind it’.

Both sessions will take place at the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre where most of the debates will be hosted. Also taking the theatre’s stage will be Jorge Palma. This Portuguese artist has two concerts scheduled for the 14th and 15th of April, at 9:30 p.m. Tickets sell for 20 euros.

Throughout the festival week, big names such as Afonso Cruz, Francisco José Viegas, Paulo Moura, Cláudia Clemente, Graça Alves, Margarida Vila-Boa (Portugal), Tabish Khair (India), Rafael Marques, Ondjaki (Angola), Samar Yazbek (Syria) and Cyan Jones (United Kingdom) will be sharing their perspectives on truth and lies with the audience. ‘Every child in the World should be conceived as a being born to read’, ‘Life is either a religious act or a stupid and useless one’ and ‘Man needs the worst of what he can find within himself’ are just some of the topics for the talks that will take place at the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre.

As with last year’s edition, the only requirement for attending these talks is stopping by the theatre’s ticket office to withdraw a free ticket. Also, please note that most talks will be primarily in Portuguese.
