The 2016 edition of the Funchal Jazz Festival kicks off today with the Fred Hersch Trio.
With two concerts on the stage of Parque de Santa Catarina, this year’s edition of the Funchal Jazz festival kicks off today.
This year’s opening concert was left in the hands of the Fred Hersch Trio, a group comprising John Hébert (Bass), Eric McPherson (Drums) and, naturally, Fred Hersch (piano), a ‘musician with a long track’, as the festival’s artistic director, Paulo Barbosa, mentioned. The concert is to start at 9:30 p.m.
A little after 11:00 p.m. it will be the turn of António Sánchez & Migrations. This group comprises António Sánchez (drums and voie), Thana Alexa (voice), Seamus Blake (sax tenor, EWI), John Escreet (piano and Rhodes piano) and Matt Brewer (bass and electric bass). Out of curiosity, it should be mentioned that António Sanchez was the person responsible for the soundtrack of the 4 Oscar-winning film ‘Birdman’ and has already been awarded a Grammy for his work earlier this year.
The program for this year’s edition has attracted a great deal of attention. Paulo Cafôfo, the mayor of the Town Hall of Funchal, regards the 2016 Funchal Jazz Festival as offering ‘the best of what the world has to offer’.
But your evening’s worth of jazz does not end at Parque de Santa Catarina. The SCAT Music Club is host to the afterhours concerts, with a jam session with Ricardo Toscano (high sax), João Pedro Coelho (piano), Romeu Tristão (bass) and João Pereira (drums), the members of the Ricardo Toscano Quartet.

A one day ticket costs 15 euros the three day ticket selling for 30 euros. Tickets can be bought at the event’s venue. Children aged 12 and under are granted free entrance.
