The Extreme Sailing Series’ 16 will hold its 6th act in the bay of Funchal between the 22nd and the 25th of September.

Initially meant to be held in Bosphorus city, in Istanbul, this competition will be a first for Funchal, which had never before served as venue for an event ‘of this nature and on such a scale’, according to the Regional Director for Tourism.

For a successful event it will be necessary to look at how it is usually hosted in other cities and how both tourists and residents tend to adhere to it. In such a way, it is expected that the region can find a way to innovate while at the same time live up to the event’s standards says Kátia Carvalho.

Madeira’s participation in the circuit is a unique opportunity. Eduardo Jesus looks at it as moment to strengthen the island’s notoriety in this field since it gathers all the favourable conditions to ‘be on the map of great international sporting events’.

The Portuguese SAIL team, now SAIL Portugal – Visit Madeira, will also be participating in this competition spanning three continents for the first time.

The annual sailing event held by OC Sports has been happening every year since 2007, this being its 10th edition. The competition, already acknowledge by European awards, lasts for 10 months and comprises 8 acts going through 8 cities including Madeira and Lisbon.
