Some activities that you can explore in the island.
Madeira walks
Madeira Island hides within countless breathtaking tracks, cutting through from North to South, East to West. These walks make possible for one to visit old water courses, discover stunning landscapes, go above the clouds to the highest point of the Island and swim in lagoons found in mountains. The most famous are: Caldeirão Verde, Pico do Arieiro, Levada do Alecrim, 25 Fontes and Rabaçal, but there are many others and all worth a visit. Wear suitable shoes and have fun through the Island’s heart.
Canyoning
The archipelago of Madeira possesses excelent conditions for an activity such as canyoning. With the beautiful Laurissilva Forest as the background, canyoning combines mountaineering, swimmming and obstacle bypassing techniques to descend a riverbed, all in deep contact with nature and all its unique features.. There are several companies in the region exploiting this activity, granting several routes with a wide array of prices for those who are keen on trying.
Cable Car
You can take a cable car from Funchal to Monte while having a stuning 360° view of the city. The nearly vertical ride is just over 3km and allows you to go from the sea to the mountain in just 15 minutes. From the soothing green spaces to the city buzz, this journey offers you a unique view over the city. The stations, in Almirante Reis and Monte, in Largo das Babosas, are open from 9:00 to 17:45 all year long.
Wicker Baskets
Madeira's basket sledges are one of the eldest and most tradition forms of transportation in Madeira. Starting in Monte, these are driven by two experienced drivers. This used to be one of the most eficient ways to get to the center of Funchal. Nowadays, the only go as far as Livramento, in a 10-minute 2km route, still as charming and adventurous as before. You can get a ride from one of these from monday to saturday from 9:00 to 18:00 or on sunday from 9:00 to 13:00.
Surf
Surf started to be seen as a sport in Madeira in the 70's but only started atracting international surfers in the 90's. Having several spots around the island, surf is growing within the region. Places like Paúl do Mar, with waves coming from the right and Jardim do Mar, only meant for professionals or kamikazes present all who pick this island to practice this sport a wide range of options.
Golf
The archipelago of Madeira has three golf courses: Two in Madeira island and one in Porto Santo. Santo da Serra Golf, the oldest of the three was created by Robert Trent Jones, holding 27 holes. Palheiro Golf was visioned by Cabell Robinson, and each of its 18 holes has a stuning view over Funchal's bay. Right around the corner from our island, Porto Santo Golf Club, also has 18 holes in between dunes and cliffs.The work of Severiano Ballesteros showcases several landscapes from the golden island.
