At 9:30 p.m. on November 18th, the Cathedral of Funchal will host a concert by the Madeira Classical Orchestra (MCO). They are set to play the great masterpieces that have left their mark in the history of western music.

Part of the ‘Great Masterpieces Cycle’, the MCO is playing two masterpieces that are very much alive in our modern culture, W. A. Mozart’s ‘Requiem’ and the 4th movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, with lyrics by Friedrich Schiller. Two choices that reflect the ‘excellence of the orchestra’s programme’, says Norberto Gomes, the MCO’s artistic director.

These two emblematic creations represent the debut of maestro Artur Pinho Maria directing the Madeira Classical Orchestra, joined by the Inês de Castro Symphonic Choir, from Coimbra, where he is also a member of the artistic direction. A perfect combination harmonized with a space which is also a regional landmark.

The Concert is a charity initiative paying tribute to the victims of the wildfires of August 2016, appealing to the generosity of the audience who can make a donation to the Regional Delegation of the Portuguese Red Cross, the entity in charge of managing it.

The Inês de Castro Symphonic Choir, the only resident choir in Coimbra, under the artistic direction of Artur Pinho Maria, already present in Spain and the USA, was selected in 2015 by the Distinguished Concerts International New York to represent Portuga’s Symphonic Choirs at the Carnegie Hall in Midtown Manhattan.

Alsojoining the Classical Orchestra for this concert are four soloists, two them born in Madeira. Mariana Pimenta (soprano), born in Madeira and now soloist member of the La Banda Ariosa ensemble, Cátia Moreso (mezzo-soprano), winner of three national awards, Alberto Sousa (tenor), who has performed in several international stages including Japan and Ricardo Panela (baritone), who has made his career giving Lecture-Recitals, having recently performed in London.

Two striking historic masterpieces, to be performed in Friday, in a free of entrance charge event at the Cathedral of Funchal. The Madeira Classical Orchestra and its artistic director Norberto Gomes invite you to, once more, dream through music and ‘be led where your soul takes you’.
