The details behind the evolution of the techniques of embroidery production in Madeira throughout the last 150 years can now be found in the Bordal’s most recent venture “The history of embroidery production in Madeira”.

This new attraction is the result of a set of improvements carried out in the factory, which led the company to display the production process in a museum. From now onwards, Bordal visitors can observe the embroidery manufacturing process live, which is still done manually, and further understand the historical background of each step of the process.

The display features photographs of old factories which document the manufacturing process. The images have been placed exactly in the same sections where they are still manually embroidered today, offering visitors a unique experience at the Bordal factory.

The historical route also allow visitors to look at several embroidered pieces, documents, records and some embroideries manufactured by Bordal since its establishment in 1962. Featured examples include replicas of the outfit worn by the first daughter of the Dukes of York, Sarah and Andrew, manufactured in 1988.

The factory and the shop can be found at Rua Dr.Fernão de Ornelas, in Funchal.
