Clube Naval do Funchal has launched the first ever underwater route in Madeira, allowing for observation of marine fauna and flora, whilst being guided by a cable which prevents divers getting lost or straying from the path.

The route, known as “Baixa das Moreias”, intends on being a further contribution towards tourism on the Island of Madeira. According to Mafalda Freitas, president of the Clube Naval do Funchal, waters surrounding the archipelago of Madeira gather “exceptional conditions for diving” due to high visibility, mild temperature and the colour of the Ocean. Diving in these waters also allows one to see a great number of different species, some of which are protected.

The underwater route is located at Quinta da Calaça, home to the head-quarters of Clube Naval do Funchal´s diving centre, which is open to the general public. The cable of this underwater route is subdivided into two, one for the more experienced divers which reaches 22 metres and another for the less experienced divers which reaches 8 metres in depth.

Each diver is given a card containing important information regarding the route, the most emblematic species and the danger that some species may pose to divers. This information is available in Portuguese, English and German.
