Madeira wins over the World

Madeira has now been acknowledged for the second year in a row as the World’s leading destination.

After winning the award for Europe’s leading destination, 2016 sees Madeira come out a winner for a second time at the World Travel Awards (WTA), this time as the World’s leading destination. The ceremony where the awards known as the ‘Oscars of Tourism’ are handed out is taking place at the Maldives.

Turismo da Madeira is represented at the event in the person of the Regional Director for Tourism, Kátia Carvalho who dedicates this award to all the population of Madeira stressing ‘those who, in this sector, contribute to a notoriety that shows through on a daily basis and on many levels’.

The director notes how the population ‘deserves this award because our people differentiate us in the market. We know how to host and take care of our tourists like no one else does and that can only happen because we are a mature destination that tends to its residents first and, through them, develops a genuine, authentic tourism culture which accounts for our success.’

Eduardo Jesus, Regional Secretary for the Economy, Tourism and Culture considers both of the 2016 awards to be ‘two awards acknowledging our quality internationally and motivating us to keep walking forward with confidence and sure of the strategy we have been following. This is, no doubt, the best of closing that which seems will be the best year ever for the Region’s tourism sector’.

It should be noted that Madeira won the title of Europe’s leading island destination in 2013 and 2014, and been distinguished as the world’s leading island destination in 2015.
